As the Technology advances it is therefore something to ponder on for the parents, especially if you want to see the better future for your children. The parental control apps and software developers have keenly interested to make the security layer consistent by spending too much in this industry as well.
In order to make the right choice for your family, here are the top 5 parental control apps for 2018 that we think stand out the most:
- ContentWatch Net Nanny 7
- Circle With Disney
- Symantec Norton Family Premier
- OpenDNS FamilyShield
This is one of the best Parental Control apps out there. It offers impressive content filtering, and lets you set time usage limit. The web filtering lets you block content such as Pornography, violence, drugs and other harmful content. One thing that makes this app stand out is its availability on different platforms, as many Parental Control apps mainly focus on Windows but Qustiodio is available on Windows, MAC, IOS, ANDROID and surprisingly even NOOK.
It’s an easy to use app which lets you set time schedules, block harmful sites and other prohibited content. The paid version also offers SMS monitoring, social media features, and per-app controls.
This app lets you Browser-independent content filter, handles HTTPS traffic. Set time usage limit for internet and different devices. It also lets you track Location of your child. There’s also an extra safety tool for children, by pressing the panic button on the app the child can inform his parents if he’s in danger.
The only drawbacks this app has are its expensiveness, limited social network monitoring, and its interface but these can be overlooked seeing it’s excellent performance overall. It is a sure winner among other Parental Control Software.
Qustodio offers other apps such as Qustodio for School and Qustodio for Office which offer slightly different features as Qustodio for Family.
2. ContentWatch Net Nanny 7
Of all the other Applications, NetNanny proves to be one of the best at web filtering, Net Nanny has the ability to block profanity, blocking inappropriate sites and images. You can warn your child about a site’s content instead of blocking all of it.
Net Nanny can be easily customized and block access to sites that provide a wide range of content from search engines to mail, to porn and pop-ups. The Pop-up blocker on this app is quite efficient. You can manage whitelists and blacklists. The program is protected by an administrative password and cannot be uninstalled no matter how hard someone tries.
Overall, Net Nanny provides you with safe surfing and strong internet filtering. Another great advantage of installing this app is that you don’t have to be on your PC, in fact, you can access it through the web or your mobile app, all you need are the account details.
3. Circle With Disney
The last Parental Control Software on our list is Circle with Disney. This little box can manage every device on the network; it comes with an easy to use setup, can easily be accessed through the mobile app and has the ability to manage every device on your network just like OpenDNS. The web filtering and time usage limit is efficient.
Circle with Disney comes with Category based Filtering; you can block categories on the web and stop your child from accessing harmful content on the web. It can even cut off and pause internet access to keep your kids from wasting time online.
The setbacks to Circle with Disney are that it has trouble differentiating between same devices which can become quite hard to manage. It comes with an expensive subscription fee from $9.95 monthly — making it $120 yearly. It is one of the most expensive Parental Control Software that we have reviewed.
In conclusion, every Parental Control Software is unique on it’s own and provides parents with the basic security to keep their children safe from the harmful content present online. Whether it’s web filtering, time usage limit or blocking inappropriate apps or tracking location, every application helps you in one way or another.
4. Symantec Norton Family Premier
Norton Family Premiere is a decent parental control app that lets you control your child’s basic online activities. This app provides the features such as web supervision, Social media supervision, time supervision, Location tracker and lets you block certain apps on Android devices.
Social Media supervision is not that efficient as it only applies on Facebook, which updates frequently too so the app cannot keep up but it notifies you or warns the child when he is about to share some information online. You can easily block the content he isn’t supposed to see.
Norton Family is an excellent location tracker with which you can easily locate your child by standard methods of monitoring GPS and Wi-Fi use, as well as by tracking the SIM card.
If compared to other Parental Control applications Norton Family doesn’t provide robust features but it can be quite handy if you simply want to keep things basic.
Norton Family lets you see your child’s YouTube, Hulu and yahoo history. You can even restrict the videos he can see but there are a few shortcomings to this app as kids can easily outsmart it by using the mobile YouTube app or turning off the restricted mode.
Overall, It’s an excellent app that includes the ability to track an unlimited number of devices, and its easy-to-use interfaces. However, Mac support is not included and it is not fully browser-independent. If you are looking for more flexibility, consider our top two choices, Qustodio or Net Nanny.
5. OpenDNS FamilyShield
OpenDNS Family Shield offers a broader scale protection on the web. It lets you filter web content for all devices connected to one network. For instance, when you block a certain domain, noone can access that site.
Although the other parental control applications provide more security and surveillance in real-time, kids can still access harmful content through consoles such as PlayStation or X box, or they could even access it through a device that a security application doesn’t support. This is where OpenDNS comes in handy as it lets you block things on a wider scale.
OpenDNS has all the essential features available for free. From handling IP address to stat reports of each site visited and blocked. It even lets you block a domain from within the stat report.
One setback is that despite being able to inform you of every URL visited it cannot tell which user access which site. Overall, it is an excellent defense against malicious phishing sites and can be used along with other Parental Security applications we mentioned for extra security measures.
