What is USB?

USB Transfer Speeds:
There are several versions of USBs, and USBs have come a long way over the years. The first ever USB 1.x which supported the 1.x version is an external bus standard which supports the data transfer which has the rate of 12 Mbps, and it can support up to 127 devices.
The USB 2.0 which is also known as the hi-speed USB, was first developed by Compaq, HP, Microsoft, NEC, Philips and Lucent. It was introduced in 2001 and is is capable of having data transfer rate of up to 480 MBps, and 60 Mbps.
The USB 3.0 which is famously known as the SuperSpeed USB, was introduced in 2009 by the Buffalo Technology. It was an improvisation of the 2.0 USB technology, and managed to increase the performance, speed and the bandwidth capacity. The USB 3.0 has the transfer rate of up to 5.0 GBps, or 640 GBps.
The USB 3.1 which has is known as USB 3.1 Gen1, was first included in the motherboards of DELL, ASUS and Gigabyte Technology. It is the most latest version and invention of the USB, and has the fastest transfer rate compared to that of the old ones. It has the capability of transfering up to 10 Gbps of data, and most of the devices today are coming with this version of the USB.
USB version compatibility
Every version of the USB port today is either forward compatible or backward compatible which means that it could support any version above or below the current one. If you have a 3.0 USB port then the 1.1 and 2.0 technology would easily work on it too but if your usb port is lower than 3.0 then the 3.0 or 3.1 USB would not transfer at the same rate but the rate it is actually designed for. If you use 3.1 USB then on a 2.0 USB port it would work at a slower rate.
